The most sought after raptors of Tal chhapar are:- Laggar falcon, Red necked falcon, Tawny eagle, Booted eagle, Indian spotted eagle, Greater spotted eagle, Short toed snake eagle, Montague’s Harrier, Common Kestrel, Lesser Kestrel, Merlin, Eurasian sparrowhawk, Black winged kite, Marsh harrier, Pallid Harrier, Long Legged Buzzard, Common Buzzard, White eyed buzzard, Steppe Eagle, Imperial Eagle, Bonellies Eagle, Spotted owlet, Indian eagle owl, Short eared owl, Indian scopes owl, Cinerous Vulture, Griffon Vulture, Egyptian vulture.

Among raptors of Tal chhapar, some are residents, while others are passage migrants or local migrants and some are winter migrants.

The resident raptors of Tal chhapar are Laggar Falcon, red necked Falcon, Tawny eagle, Short toed snake eagle, Montague’s harrier, Black winged kite, Spotted owlet, Indian eagle owl, and Egyptian vulture.

The winter migrant raptors of Tal chhapar include Steppe eagle, Imperial eagle, Greater spotted eagle, Common kestrels, Pallid harrier, Long legged buzzard, Cinereous vulture, Griffon Vulture and Eurasian sparrowhawk, Short eared owl and Indian scopes owl.

The passage and local migrant raptors of Tal chhapar are White eyed buzzard, Lesser kestrels, Marsh harrier, Booted eagle, Bonelli eagle, Indian spotted eagle.

The above category of raptors of Tal chhapar is tentatively based on the movement as arrival and departure of raptors in and around Tal chhapar sanctuary. The passage migrants stay for some time and move according to the availability of food.

The major food for raptors of Tal chhapar include locusts in grassland and spine tailed lizard. While the locusts are in plenty starting pre monsoon months till October end, the spine tailed lizard goes in winter hibernation from mid November till February end. So during this time desert jird is major food for raptors of Tal chhapar. The scavenging raptors mostly feed on cow carcasses and dead animal in and around sanctuary.

  4. We stayed twice at Raptors Inn. It was a great home stay. Atul is a perfect guide and host. Every time, we got great sighting and clicks. During our stay, we enjoyed super tasty traditional Rajasthani home-made food, specially prepared by our host’s family.
